What is the best game where you can eat pie?
Because it’s the opening line to our theme tune, it’s the first question anyone’s ever heard ask on our acclaimed Best Games podcast: a five-star performance that some critics have described as “the safe as a badger” and “short transmission time”.
So we decided to ask him for our first live podcast, recorded at EGX London earlier this year, with an open mic for audience members to hear their suggestions. After some debate about Breath of the Wild, and whether pizza constitutes a pie or not, an audience member stood up and made a suggestion so perfect that it earned them an award and our eternal gratitude.
We’d like to thank everyone who turned up, it was really special to see those seats with real people in them and we loved how enthusiastic everyone was to take part.
Please let us know what you think of the show – and if this is your first time listening, come back to listen to previous episodes. If you have topic suggestions, we’d love to hear them, so please comment below or tweet them.
The best game where you can eat pie, according to the panel
The best suggestions came from the public, but here’s what our idiot staff picked:
Tom – Breath of the Wild
Tom thinks Breath of the Wild is one of the best games of all time, and you can cook and eat pie in it. I can’t blame him for that, but I like to rob him, so he didn’t win.
Connor – Spider-Man 2
Connor entered this based on a pizza delivery mini-game, immediately encountering two semantic but fatal flaws: first, delivering a pie is not the same as eating it. Second, pizza is not pie (do not write).
Donaldson – Dead Rising and or Final Fantasy (various)
Of course Donaldson came out swinging with the choices, and rightly so, both are great moves: Final Fantasy for photorealistic pies that look delicious enough to make you lick the TV, and Dead Rising, where not only you can eat pie but also wave it like a weapon. On this basis, he won for the panel.
Audience – Celeste
But the audience won over with Celeste, a beautiful retrovania platformer where you spend the entire game collecting strawberries that are baked into a huge pie that everyone eats at the end. A profound and award-worthy suggestion!
