At the request of the Topeka Police Department (TPD) and the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office (SSO), the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating a shooting involving officers involving a murder suspect involving the two agencies on Thursday morning in Downtown Topeka.
Early Thursday morning, officers responded to 3500 blocks of SW Kerry Avenue to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found one person dead at the scene and another injured.
The identity of the deceased is kept secret until further notification by relatives can be made. Investigators with TPD quickly identified the suspects and got to work to find them. The relationship between the suspect and the murder victim is domestic.

The suspect shot several times at law enforcement officers at the scene. Several law enforcement officers returned fire. At least one officer was shot by the suspect during this incident. The officer received medical treatment at a local hospital.
The Topeka Police Department and the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office will hold a joint press conference in SE 6th and SE Quincy at 3 p.m. There will also be Facebook Live on the social media sites of both agencies.
