An RCMP officer on Vancouver Island could face prosecution after a car chase that resulted in the suspect being bitten by a serious dog.
It happened in Ladysmith, April 2021, when officers used their vehicle to stop a white van refusing to pull over on Highway 1, near Timberlands Road.
A man was arrested using a police dog, which bit the suspect, causing serious injuries.
The Office of Independent Investigation (IIO), the civilian-led superintendent of police, has concluded that there are reasonable grounds to believe that one of the officers committed a crime in connection with their driving, and use of police dogs.
The decision for the charges now rests with the BC Prosecution Service which will decide whether there is a possibility of conviction based on evidence.
IIO asks anyone with information about the incident to call the Witness Line toll-free number at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
