Opinion: It’s time to drop your Amazon Prime subscription

Amazon has just announced that it will raise the price of Amazon Prime in several European countries in September 2022. As a result, the price of Amazon Prime membership in the five largest markets in Europe is rising by as much as 43%.

Amazon informed its customers about the upcoming price increase in an email. The annual price of Prime rises by £16 in the UK to £95 a year, which is an increase of 20%. In Germany, the price increased by 20.90 euros to 89.90 euros, which is equivalent to an increase of 30%.

Italian and Spanish Amazon Prime customers have paid about half the price of German and British Amazon Prime customers so far. Prime in Italy and Spain rises from 36 euros per year to 49.90 euros, an increase of 39%. In France, the cost of a Prime subscription increased from 49 euros to 69.90 euros, an increase of 43%. The cost is still relatively low when compared to the price of the UK, Germany and the US.

Amazon Prime monthly subscriptions are also rising in countries, so an annual Prime membership remains cheaper than a monthly one. Pricing is still lower than Prime in the US, where customers pay $139 per year or $14.99 per month. The change is effective September 15, 2022.

Amazon pointed to “increased inflation and operating costs,” according to Reuters.

What can you do about it

With the cost of living rising in many regions of the world, many may want to cut expenses. Some Amazon Prime customers may extend their membership for another year at the current price, but this depends on a number of factors:

  • New or non-Prime customers can sign up on September 14, 2022 to get the old price for a full year.
  • Existing customers who pay monthly may switch to an annual plan in September to take advantage of that as well.
  • Existing customers whose subscription expires before September 2022 can also renew at a lower rate.

Others may ask themselves if Amazon Prime is worth it after September 2022. The answer depends on usage but also whether you’re ready to make some changes.

One example: Amazon Prime customers get free shipping on most merchandise sold by Amazon. While this is excellent, especially if you make small purchases, non-Amazon Prime customers may get free shipping as well. Here in Germany, orders of €29 or more usually get free shipping. You can combine orders to reach that amount, unless something is time-critical. There may also be options to make purchases elsewhere, including buying locally whenever possible.

Amazon Prime Video is another major part of the subscription. You can access TV shows and movies that you can stream for free. The question you might be asking yourself is, is it really necessary to subscribe to Amazon Prime all year long.

Content on streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ or Netflix is limited. The catalog of shows and movies offered is limited, and most subscribers will eventually reach saturation.

One of the best options for dealing with these streaming services is to subscribe to any of these services for a month or two every year. In the case of Amazon, this will also give you the opportunity to be a Prime member during Amazon Prime Day or during the holiday season, provided that is something you care about.

Amazon Prime’s one-month subscription is priced at £8.99 in the UK after a price increase in September. A two-month subscription will be around £19, which leaves plenty of cash for other streaming services or even pay shipping and deal with some items.

Now you: Are you an Amazon Prime customer? What do you think of the price increase?
