Nicole Asensio is back with a new song “Bawal” in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Gabi Dandan. The track began as an impromptu jam when Dandan lowered his guitar and began playing keyboards. Asensio remembers that it initially took only 30 minutes to write the song. “This is one of the simplest lyrical expressions I’ve ever written,” she said, “nothing poetic here, just a feeling revolving around the question: ‘Baket Mesarab Kabag Pawal? “It was one of those instances where the yung song lyrics and the melody of Halos sabay lumabas came out, and the Halos tapos na ‘yung song formed in the first session. I was escorted to the song by the strings. The song is a slow, emotional mixture of fervor and sadness of wanting something you can’t have.” Said Dandan: I love working with Nicole because I tend to write in an improvisational style. Nicole encourages that environment. Her brain is like a factory for making song lyrics, and the workflow is smooth.” Musicians Who played “Bawal” were Otep Concepcion (drums), Rommel de la Cruz (bass), Nico Rivera (keyboards), Ted Ampere (cello), Lester Sorella (trumpet), Mike Lewis (vocal arrangement, backup vocals), And Dandan (guitar, percussion, backup vocals). The track was mixed by Angee Rozul and mastered in Dolby Atmos by Waxified Sound Production. Dandan recounted his feeling of concern before the recording began: “It was very scary. I went early to calm my nerves. When the guys arrived, things went smoothly. I knew what I wanted to do, but these guys were so good, I didn’t have to say much, just a little.” From directing and they did what they wanted. It was a fun process. Post production was easy and efficient. Nicole is so honest, she makes sure to tell me what she wants while we’re still in the (recording) process and not when everything is done. And I appreciate that.” Asensio Insights: “The nice thing about songwriting, technically speaking, is walang bawal… you can write about anything, anyone and everything… you can use any tone, rhythm, theme, and lyric that reflects your soul and feeling… Marami ngang bawal, ngunit sa bajlikha, lahat bowedi. This is why creativity proves to be my biggest goal and my escape. No one tells us where the creative pursuit will lead, but one thing is for sure, it’s pointless, it’s always ‘masarap’ “Bawal” on digital music platforms starting Oct. 28.
