Every year, thousands of farmers and commercial grain operators risk their lives to break into grain bins to remove lumps or spoiled grain. As rural communities are well aware, the dangers of entering cereal boxes are overlooked.
“It only takes seconds or a simple mistake for an adult to drown in a fast stream of grain and become completely trapped or swallowed,” said Brad Leggett, president of the nationwide farm business. “Adding to the danger is the lack of rescue equipment available to local fire departments and emergency responders, who are called in to help when a worker is trapped.”
To help lead the fight against these incidents affecting farming communities, Nationwide, the nation’s leading farm and ranch insurance company, has provided fire departments with resources to raise awareness of the dangers of entering grain formations. It launched its Grain Bin Suraksha campaign in 2014 to prepare for an effective response.
The West Plains Fire Department is one of 58 fire departments to receive these resources during the 2022 campaign, and is one of 265 fire departments to benefit from the program since its inception. The grain rescue tube will be stored at the West Plains Fire Department for use by all regional fire departments within a 30-mile radius.
Tracy Wiley, owner of Wiley Insurance Agency, was appointed to the Missouri Fire and Safety Commission in 2019 by Governor Mike Parson. She is the first woman to serve on the committee. Willie’s parents were rural firefighters, and she remains a staunch rescue advocate and first responder. She shared that her mother, Ella Stevens, suffered life-threatening injuries while fighting a lawn fire in 1999. “Firefighters lay down their lives for us every day, so this initiative is the least we can do so they can safely protect our communities. Grain rescue tube delivery and training were conducted by the National Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS) and included trapping and rescue simulation using the latest grain trapping simulator, which is trailer-loaded and tow-capable. About 100 bushels of grain.
Since 2014, at least five fire departments have used piping and training to save the lives of workers trapped in cereal boxes.
