Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka faces punishment for having an affair with a female staff member, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Udoka’s suspension may be “significant”, with Udoka likely out of action for the entire 2022-23 season.
Udoka, who was hired by the Celtics last summer, is in a long-term relationship with actress Nia Long.
Udoka and Celtics started last season unstable, with a score of 23-24 through the first 57 games of the season. The team then made a superb turn, going 28-7 with the league’s best attack and defense during that time.
The Celtics cruised impressively through the playoffs, reaching the Finals, where they lost to the Golden State Warriors in six games.
After a solid off-season that included the acquisition of Malcolm Brogdon, the Celtics were considered strong championship contenders, with Udoka serving as one of the league’s most promising coaches.
Wojnarowski reports that Udoka’s job is not considered to be in jeopardy, although NBA teams have fired members of his staff over the affair. Last September, the Minnesota Timberwolves fired basketball operations president Gersson Rosas over poor performance and consensual relationships with female staff members came to light, ESPN reported.
Charania reports that assistant coach Joe Mazzulla is expected to fill in as head coach.
