‘If you vote for Tory, you don’t deserve to be revived by the NHS’: Anger at nurse outburst

One nurse has sparked outrage by saying live on national television: ‘If you vote for the Conservatives, you don’t deserve to be revived by the NHS’.

Former NHS nurse Miranda Hughes made the burning comment during a live TV debate on Channel 5 last night.

The outburst came after Ms Hughes also denounced Brexit as ‘absurd’ and ’embarrassing’ during an earlier rant on BBC Question Time.

His inflammatory remarks about the NHS were made last night at a live debate called ‘Britain on the Brink’, hosted by Jeremy Vine.

Having been challenged on the claim, Ms Hughes now working in the private sector, retracted her impassioned statement, insisting: ‘No, of course I will, of course I will.’

But his original comments have sparked outrage online, with some describing him as ‘disgusting’ and ‘bigot’.

Others point out that more than 14 million people voted for the Conservatives in the 2019 General Election.

And today the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the independent regulator for nurses, and nursing colleagues, said today it was aware of the comments.

A spokesperson said: “We have seen many tweets about comments made yesterday on television.

‘Our code is clear that the professionals on our list must promote professionalism and trust at all times.

‘If any concerns are raised to us, we will always look into them and consider taking action if necessary.’

Ms Hughes made the comments as she explained to the host, Vine, about her decision to leave the NHS for the private sector.

She said: ‘I couldn’t handle the emotional stress of not being able to give birth to my patient.

The outburst comes after self-proclaimed

‘When you sign up to be a nurse, you sign up to put patients at the forefront of everything you do.

‘You are blackmailed to the point where you can’t treat people the way you need to treat them.

‘And it eats you up, because you are there to do work as a loving person, but there are no resources.

Growing in anger as he spoke, he later said: ‘And you’re told consistently on the news that nursing homes are being fenced off, but that’s a lie.’

‘And I’m sorry, but if you’ve voted for Tory, you don’t deserve to be revived by the NHS.

‘I know it’s hard, I know it’s tough, but I saw these guys and it made me really angry.

Asked if he meant what he said by host Jeremy Vine, he replied: ‘No, of course I would, of course I would.

‘But it was terrible the way we were treated. All the nurses have been slapped in the face.’

His comments today sparked a backlash online, with people describing his views as ‘bigism’.

One person to comment is former Sky and GB News presenter Colin Brazier. He said on Twitter: ‘There’s no point in eliminating ‘…all it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing’ too regularly.

‘But really. Saying that Tory voters shouldn’t be resuscitated if they need to, in hospital, goes through a few lines.’

David Atherton, who describes himself as a Libertarian, and former contributor to the far-right site Breibert, tweeted: ‘Left nurse Miranda Hughes said on Channel 5’s ‘Britain on the Brink’ last night that the Tories ‘do not deserve resuscitation. .’

‘I thought ‘never kissed Tory’ was bad enough for fanaticism.’

Another person who responded to the video, Scottish Conservative councilor Iain Gall, tweeted: ‘13,966,454 people voted conservative in the 2019 general election including me.

‘No doubt this cretin has #bekind in its bio.’

It comes following a spate of criticism of Labor politicians and activists following anti-Tory statements.

Labor frontbench Lucy Powell earlier this year was accused of stoking divisions after posing in a T-shirt claiming she ‘never kissed Tory’.

The party’s culture spokesman was told to ‘grow up’ after he was pictured wearing a T-shirt at the Manchester Pride parade.

But Labor allies suggest the row over the T-shirt, which has become popular in some left-wing circles, is an attempt to distract people from the cost of living crisis.

Ms Powell, the party’s cultural spokesperson, was told to ‘grow up’ after she was pictured wearing a T-shirt at this weekend’s Manchester Pride parade.

Chris Clarkson, Tory MP for Heywood and Middleton, said of the shirt: ‘It’s childish, divisive and completely at odds with the spirit of inclusion that Pride is supposed to embody. Grow.’

Sara Britcliffe, for Hyndburn and Haslingden, added: ‘Here’s the thing. Make us v them. Quite disgusting from the shadow minister.

‘Different political beliefs should not generate hatred.’

Tory MP Dehenna Davison, who came out as bisexual last year, also called the stunt ‘teenage’.

A source close to Mrs Powell said last night: ‘While the Conservatives are glued to the T-shirt worn for the Pride event in Manchester this weekend – the T-shirt worn by the Labor Party on all Pride for more than a decade to much cheer. – cheers from the crowd – millions of families and retirees are very worried about how they will pay their energy bills this winter.’

Labor deputy leader Angela Rayner also faced criticism last year after calling the Conservatives “trash” during a fringe meeting at a Labor conference in Brighton.

He said: ‘We can’t be worse than a bunch of trash, homophobic, racist, misogynist, absolutely vile, banana republic, vile, vile, Etonian trash.’

He later “selflessly” apologized for the remarks and said he had “reflected” the tone of the political debate following the assassination of Conservative MP Sir David Amess in October last year and would no longer use such language.
