A concerned citizen said he was able to obtain a laptop issued by the Ministry of Education (DepEd) from a surplus store in Mandaue City at a competitive price.
According to him, he bought the laptop for only 9,999 pesos and the store still has more than a hundred of the exact same model.
Furthermore, he said that the laptop speaker has a DepEd label “Sulong EduKalidad”. Even the headset packaging bears the DepEd logo and the project tags “Purchase DCP Packages”.
For this reason, the Department of Education (DepEd) in the Central Visayas has opened an investigation.
Dr Salustiano Jimenez, regional director of DepEd, said they aimed to reveal how the laptop came to a local store when teachers should have used it for online teaching.
“We are conducting an investigation to check whether it is right for the teachers in the central Visayas or not. We have monitored the ones that were distributed to the teachers and so far, they are all in the custody of the beneficiaries.
As such, Jimenez said it is possible that the laptops were stolen from another area.
“I appeal to those who bought the same laptops from the store to coordinate with us,” Jimenez said.
