In fact, LIV targeted many top-class golfers on the PGA Tour and managed to win a few of them as well. The list contains some of the biggest names like Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson. However, both faced strong public criticism over their switch to the Saudi-backed league.

Charles Barkley commented in an interview earlier in the week that critics had forgotten Mickelson’s contribution to golf. He went on to add that Mickelson is the next big name after Tiger Woods. Moreover, he praised him for ‘carrying’ the PGA Tour, with Tiger for the last 30 years. Therefore, he admits that he hates to see criticism directed at him. According to Barkley, Mickelson should do what he thinks is best for him. In addition, he added that criticism leveled at him would ultimately undermine the sport itself.

Many criticized Mickelson and other LIV players for accepting money from the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. In fact, this fund is led by crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman. Salman is believed to have orchestrated the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. It was also reported that Mickelson received $200 million as a signing bonus.
