Barcelona no contact with Lionel Messi to return

Lionel Messi has no contact with Barcelona regarding a possible return to Camp Nou, according to a report.

Speculation has been rife around a reunion with La Blaugrana for the Argentine, who departs for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2021 amid Barca’s financial turmoil.

Messi endured a mixed season during his debut campaign at the Parc des Princes, and he has just one year left to run his contract with the Ligue 1 champions.

PSG and Messi could agree to extend his stay until the summer of 2024, but the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner should have no intention of signing a new contract at the Parc des Princes.

Barcelona vice-president Eduard Romeu recently heated up around Messi’s reunion, claiming that his team now have the financial strength to make a viable move.

Speaking to Radio El Mati de Catalunya, Romeu said: “It is possible financially because if he comes back it will be a free agent.

“But it’s a decision the coaching staff and players have to make. It doesn’t suit me [untuk membuat keputusan itu], but it will be worth it. Even though I don’t have it in the budget.”

Joan Laporta and Xavi have also publicly expressed their desire to bring Messi back to Catalonia, but a new report from Marca has poured cold water on those hopes.

The report claims that there have been no discussions between Messi and Barcelona regarding a move back to Camp Nou, and relations between the player and club are at ‘maximum cold’.

As a result, there is only a ‘very small’ chance that the 35-year-old could wear the Blaugrana shirt again, as he still feels betrayed by Laporta after his emotional exit.

Moreover, Barcelona should have had to cut several names from their playing squad and the above roles to facilitate Messi’s return, as the forward was left disappointed in the unnamed man for their role in his departure.

Despite claims that Messi is preparing to leave PSG in the summer of 2023, a separate report from Cadena SER – via AS – claims that Les Parisiens are working on renewing his contract.

President Nasser Al-Khelaifi is said to have been in contact with Messi’s family to submit a proposal, which will last for another year with a one-second option, and he will continue to pocket an annual salary of €30m (£26.3m).

The former Newell’s Old Boys youth player leaves Barcelona after becoming the all-time leading goalscorer and appearance maker with 672 strikes in 778 games, as well as 303 assists.

Messi won the 2021-22 Ligue 1 title with PSG last year and has opened the new season in strong form, registering six goals and eight assists in 11 games in all competitions.
