Ateneo shooting suspect to undergo mental health examination

Chow Tiao Yumol

MANILA, Philippines – Quezon City’s 98th Provincial Court of First Instance has granted a request for a mental health examination of Dr. Zhao Tiao Yumol, the suspect in the Ateneo de Manila University attack that succeeded former Lamitan, Basilan Mayor Rose Furigai, and killed two others.

According to Quirino Esgera, the lawyer for the Foregay family, the request was made by Yomol’s lawyer.

“The lawsuit has been adjourned to September 16. The defendant’s attorney requested the court to be examined by a medical expert for symptoms of an unsound mind,” came. Quirino Esgera told reporters Thursday.

Also killed in the armed attack were Foregay’s assistant Victor Capistrano, and Jennifer Bandiala, a security guard at Ateneo de Manila University.

Yumol faces three counts of murder and one count of frustrated murder due to injuries to Hanna Rose Marian Foregay, the daughter of the late former mayor.

Esgera said the court will appoint a doctor from the National Center for Mental Health to examine Yumol.

Eschera said they are upset by the turn of events.

“I would note that when he was summoned at MeTC Branch 133, he pleaded not guilty. We are surprised today that they do not wish to prosecute him.

As the legal advisor to [Furigay]The family expresses their dismay. However, we have to follow legal procedures.”

On September 16, Esgera said they would ask the court to proceed with the indictment, prior to trial and a proper trial.
